Thomas Peele: Challenging government is as patriotic as it gets - Contra Costa Times

Ten years or so ago, on a reporting trip in far Northern California with photographer Karl Mondon, I left a book in a motel room in Ukiah.

It was Daniel Ellsberg's "Secrets, A Memoir of Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers," then recently published. I'd started it the night before, rapt as Ellsberg described the first day he worked for the Defense Department, which happened to coincide with the supposed attack on the destroyer USS Maddox by North Vietnamese torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin.

Somehow, while rushing out to a musty courthouse to review an old murder file a foot thick, I must've left the book on the nightstand, which I didn't discover until trying to fall asleep that night in Eureka.

I vowed to get another copy of the book immediately. I didn't.

Soon came graduate school with a nearly impossible reading list, then a book of my own, which left me reading nothing but related subject matter for a couple of years, if I had time to read at all.

But I hoard books, which is easy, since I live a 5-minute walk from four (four!) bookstores and 10-minute drive from half-a-dozen more. A room in my house contains maybe 600 or 700 volumes, which grows weekly. (My wife sent me out for coffee one recent morning. I returned with a biography of Adlai Stevenson). It shouldn't have surprised me when going through my books last month I found another copy of Ellsberg's Secrets, acquired who knows when. I finally devoured it. While I have read a lot about Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers, I was fascinated by Ellsberg's personal accounting of his transformation from hawk to dove to leaker, to how he became who Henry Kissinger dubbed "the most dangerous man in America."

Despite the embarrassment of not finishing this vital work when I began it that night in Ukiah, it served as a reminder that the most patriotic act Americans can commit is dissent.

Loyalty, blind faith, allegiance without critical thought, seems almost...
