REDNECK QUAKER: Brother hunting duo a force in the woods - Terre Haute Tribune Star

They like to gun hunt, sharing a single shot H&R 44 rifle. A single shot tells you they are confident in their shooting. Hunting blinds are their choice of seclusion. The blinds give them freedom to move around and stay warmer. Dan placed the blinds on platforms six feet in the air and can be moved with a tractor. They are named “The Hilton” and “Motel 6.” Dan says he is blessed with a wonderful friend who lets them hunt on their property.

As Dan and Brandon were watching deer filter through the woods on that snowing evening on he second day of gun season they couldn’t see the head but it didn’t matter if it was a buck or doe. At 90 yards, Dad grunted the deer, stopping it in an open area when Brandon took his shot. After tracking the deer 30 yards they found blood, then blood spray. As they topped the hill, Dad pointed like a bird dog on point saying “Look at that Brandon!” The end of the blood trail went to a 12 pointer with a drop tin! Brandon said “I was paying attention on placing the shot not seeing his rack!” Hugs went around with Dad glowing with pride. Brandon said “Thanks Dad for taking me all these times.”

As Dad and Derron set in the blind, Dad said “Look there!” A doe came out of the woods, coming directly at them. When she was only 20 yards away, she realized something wasn’t right and tensed up while turning away to make her escape. Derron couldn’t get her in the scope the first time when he realized he had to adjust his cheek on the gun stock to make the correct eye relief on the scope. He said she had her tail raised ready to leave out. Dan said we waited two hours after he shot to let her go down.
