Century Club: A date in 1935 turned out to be quite unusual - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

It was a surprise wedding — for the bride. Selma Breinig of Overbrook had been dating Merle Millard Worman for a while. She thought March 18, 1935, would be just another date — until she saw the judge.

Mr. Worman had already asked her father, Howard Breinig, for her hand. But this was the Depression and he said “no.” The family needed her paycheck from Wetzel’s Grocery Store, where she was a cashier, stocker and meat cutter. Well, Mr. Worman wasn’t taking “no” for answer. He was working for a lawyer at the time and was able to line up a judge on short notice. They had been married for nearly 70 years when he died March 11, 2005.

Mrs. Worman, who lives in Bethel Park, celebrated her 100th birthday Monday. She was born Oct. 20, 1914, the fifth of eight children of Howard and Cecilia (Reiter) Breinig. She attended Fair Havens Public School and St. Norbert School. After high school, she went to secretarial school. She worked at Wetzels and later as a demonstrator for many products including Sealtest ice cream and Hostess HoHos.

They lived in South Park for more than 55 years and had three children: Marlene McHugh of Sebastian, Fla., Merle M. Worman Jr. of Conneaut Lake and Gloria Jean Smith, deceased. Mrs. Worman has 10 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She did volunteer work at Kiwanis and the School for the Blind. She was a Girl Scout leader and helped run the Boys and Girls Club dances. Up until a few years ago, she worked at Meals on Wheels, retiring after 19 years.

A small family gathering is planned Saturday at LeMont restaurant. Friends and relatives will come from California, Indiana, New York, Virginia, and other parts of Pennsylvania.

Since 1832, Overbrook School for the Blind has been a leader in providing educational programs to children and young people who are blind and visually impaired. Julius Friedlander, the schools founder, and other early leaders worked hard to inform people about the educational needs of the children.
