Pupils at risk of blindness from dogs' mess - Surrey Mirror

CHILDREN at a primary school could be blinded because of a few irresponsible dog owners.

That's the warning as parents and pupils are having to run the gauntlet of dogs' mess outside a primary school.

A few selfish dog owners are allowing their pets to foul the footpath in Church Road, just yards from Whyteleafe School.

The issue has been highlighted by Danny Morgan, the father of two girls who attend the school.

He said last Wednesday's return after the summer break was an unpleasant experience.

Mr Morgan said: "There was lots of dogs' mess near the school entrance.

"It looked as if several people had trodden in it. It has happened several times near this spot. A few dog owners should start taking more responsibility. The silly thing is there is a dog bin only about 50 yards away from that spot."

Mr Morgan, who lives off Beverley Road, Whyteleafe, warned that if a pupil ended up carrying some of the faeces into the classroom – and it got on their fingers – they could be blinded if they put their fingers in their eye.

Toxocara canis, a parasite in dog faeces, can cause asthma, epilepsy and blindness.

And offenders who allow their dogs to befoul a pavement risk being fined £1,000.

Tandridge District Council spokeswoman Giuseppina Valenza said: "The issue of dog owners not clearing up after their dogs is highly emotive and one of the top anti-social/health issues in street cleanliness.

"Toxocara canis can cause severe health issues, particularly in children."

She said the council provides more than 250 designated dog bins across the district, in which dog owners are urged to bag and bin their pets' waste.

Litter bins can be used too, as long as the waste is sealed securely.

She added: "If residents have any concerns about dog fouling, please report it to us on 01883 732751.

"If you own a dog, you are responsible for cleaning up after it....
