Fredericksburg hairdresser wraps half a century of styling - Virginian-Pilot

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) — At the start of her 50 years as a hairdresser in Fredericksburg in 1966, Myrna Tolley learned two lessons that served her well in her long career. She wasn't running her own business then, as it would take a few years to get her Lancaster's Beauty Shop off the ground. Tolley, now a 69-year-old Stafford County resident, was working on Franklin Street in the city at the time, in a shop called Ruby's. In those years, women came in weekly for a "shampoo and set" with curlers. Tolley, who'd learned her lessons well in a year at the Virginia School of Cosmetology in Richmond, had a client come in one day and ask for a set and frosting. So the 19-year-old diligently put the customer's hair in rollers, applied the treatment and then calculated how long the customer should sit under one of the big conical hairdryers that lined the walls of the shop. Before she could, one of the shop's veterans interceded and said the treatment needed to stay in place a good bit longer. Knowing the veteran hairdresser was wrong, Tolley nevertheless yielded to the more senior staffer. "When I finally did get her to rinse the mixture off, I could see her hair was mush," said Tolley, remembering the horrific moment like it was yesterday. "All she had left was a few sprigs of hair," said Tolley. The young hairdresser — who never had a repeat of that horrid moment — came away from it with two lessons: stick with that you know is right, and never underestimate the value and loyalty of a good customer. The veteran hairdresser — part of the Lancaster clan of barbers and hairdressers that included her father and still numbers a brother, a sister-in-law and a niece — just hung up her clippers after a half century of making women and the occasional... What makes the stretch even more remarkable is that her shop at 225 Germania Street sits in the very structure where she grew up. So she has spent the better part of 70 years there. She doesn't regret a minute of her 50 years as a hairdresser, saying the business has been good to her and that she's loved it. In more recent years, she cut back to two days a week, a concession to health challenges that include arthritis,... Source: pilotonline.com

New owner renovating troubled Syracuse high-rise for low-income families - Syracuse.com

Syracuse, N. Y. — A new owner who specializes in developing low-income housing has launched a $20 million rehabilitation of the troubled 305-unit downtown high-rise formerly known as Clinton Plaza. The Mulholland Group , of Lake Success, bought Clinton Plaza in November for $6 million from Clinton Plaza Housing Corp. It renamed the building The Royce Residence, after Royce Mulholland, the company's president, CEO and owner. Mulholland said every one of the 305 apartments in the 23-story building at 550 S. Clinton St. will be renovated, with new, energy-efficient windows, new window blinds, new kitchen appliances, countertops and cabinets, and new bathroom fixtures. Every apartment also will get air conditioning, something the building did not previously have. The building is getting a new heating system, too. In addition, Mulholland said he will "repurpose" common areas to create a fitness center, a large community room with a children's play area and a kitchen for cooking classes, and a multimedia classroom for adult education classes. Building-wide high-speed WiFi internet will also be installed at no cost to residents, he said. Artwork will be installed on walls throughout the building. Mulholland said he plans to invite art students at Syracuse University to display their work in the building. The front of the building will get an awning and new landscaping to "soften" the rather imposing look of the high-rise, one of the tallest buildings in the city. Mulholland said he plans to ask for the city's permission to install, at his expense, antique-style street lights around the property to match those in nearby Armory Square. To improve security, new closed-circuit cameras will be installed inside and outside the building, and the city has agreed to open a police substation in first-floor space provided rent-free, Mulholland said. Video screens will be installed in each apartment so that residents can see who is at the entrance before allowing a visitor into the building, he said. Tenants are being moved around within the building so that their apartments can be renovated. Mulholland said the work will be completed in June 2017. BBL Construction Services, of Albany, is doing the work and QPK Design, of Syracuse, is providing the architectural services. Most apartments in the 45-year-old building are reserved for families earning no more than 60 percent of median income in the area. Source: www.syracuse.com
