Parents urged to act on 'silent killer' window blinds after two-year-old choked to death - Daily Mail

Parents urged to act on 'silent killer' window blinds after two-year-old choked to death on tangled cord Parents urged by a coroner to check homes for 'silent killer' window blinds Coroner Joseph McCrisken issued warning at inquest of... Little Bryan Saba was playing in the living room of his home in Portadown, Co Armagh, Northern Ireland, last September when he became entangled in the looped cord of the window blind. His older sister found him hanging from the cord and he was taken to hospital in Belfast but died from his injuries 15 days later. Now, at an inquest into his death, a coroner has issued a stark warning to parents urging them to modify or remove the 'silent killer' blinds from their homes in a bid to prevent similar tragedies. His warning came after Bryan's parents issued heartfelt calls for steps to be taken to help prevent such incidents. The youngster's mother, Maria, tearfully told the inquest: 'I hope something will come out that will give better security from blind cords. Northern Ireland's coroner Joseph McCrisken said, according to Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents statistics, there had been 27 deaths linked to looped blind cords across the UK since 1999. In evidence to the inquest, a senior... 'Bryan's death is an absolute tragedy for his family - his mother, father, sisters and brothers and other family - and also for our community, of which Bryan was a member,' said Mr McCrisken. And what happened to him could also occur in hundreds if not thousands of homes across Northern Ireland. He added: 'There remains thousands, tens of thousands of lethal looped blind cords still in homes of parents and carers in Northern Ireland today. Source:

The Victorians favoured lace curtains as a way to shut out prying eyes and embellish a window. In the 1980s extra-long, swagged curtains that flowed on to the carpet like lava covered a large portion of the window. Our era’s solution is shutters, first widely used in medieval times, but still one of the best ways to let in the light, while ensuring a measure of privacy. In some parts of London the number of homes with shutters is a measure of gentrification and house prices. Source:

Nursery bosses apologise after claims baby girl was 'strangled' by blind cord at Salford nursery - Manchester Evening News

Nursery bosses have apologised to the mother of a baby girl after claims she was ‘strangled’ by a blind in the classroom. Kelly Connolly, 42, said staff at the Holyrood Nursery in Salford ‘apologised profusely’ when she met with them to discuss the shocking incident. One-year-old Willow Green was raced to A&E by Kelly after she was sent home from the nursery, on Stott Lane, with a deep red mark around her neck. Children’s nurse Kelly slammed the nursery - which cares for staff at nearby Salford Royal Hospital - for failing to immediately contact her and for failing to offer any reassurance about safeguarding at the centre. Salford Council is now investigating the scare after an A&E consultant who examined Willow wrote in to express alarm. The Bertram Nursery Group, which looks after the nursery, confirmed they were now carrying out a ‘full internal investigation’. Kelly, from Irlam, and her partner Gary Green met with nursery staff on Tuesday to grill bosses about the incident. The mum-of-four said: “They apologised profusely and accepted that the staff on the day were wrong to deal with it that way. But I can’t take her back to that nursery. Willow’s babysitter arrived to pick up the tot on Friday afternoon and was asked to sign an incident report after being told the one-year-old had suffered an ‘accident with a blind’. She said: “They insist it was not the cord and they said they do properly check the blinds on a very regular basis but on this occasion the blind was at fault. They said it was lots of bits of cotton on the blind. “I’m sure the nursery won’t let it happen again and I do think they will put things in place to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Kelly said her main concern was that she was not immediately informed about the accident. Read more: Investigation launched after shocked mum claims her baby was 'strangled'. It’s a very big thing - it’s not just a little incident. The MEN has approached the nursery for further comment. Advertising Department M. E. N.
