Though blinded at birth, Stevland Hardaway Judkins discovered a different vision on the streets of Fifties Detroit. Through his music, he brought colour to the world only he had ever seen, but after five decades of inspiration, who really knows the truth about this wonderful life of mystery, melancholy and magic?

In the summer of 1952, faith healers moved about American towns like medieval mountebanks. That was the year Lula Mae Hardaway Judkins forced her way through the crowd in Saginaw, Michigan to present her blind son to Oral Roberts, one of the most famous and sought-after healers in the United States. According to GQ magazine, Stevie wonder’s mum, on her knees among the hysterical and hopeful, she waited for Roberts to reach them, to cast out the demons from her son’s eyes as he had done with the lame and diseased who were rising on cue like jack-in-the-boxes. Roberts commanded the child to see, but the Lord, it seemed, had other ideas. Stevie Wonder would have to make do with a different kind of vision.

Wonder’s favourite word is “blessed”. It’s something he must have heard his mother say many times. She was “blessed” to have him. He was “blessed” with music. He was “blessed” to survive a car crash in 1973. He has been “blessed” with his children. “It is a blessing for me to become Stevie Wonder, but I believe God has even more for me to do than just this. I’m ready for God’s orders.” He said this in 2013, but he could just as easily have said it in 1963.

His mother, Lula Mae Hardaway, had been born near the evocatively named Hurtsboro, Alabama, but was abandoned by her own mother and raised by an aunt and uncle. In 1943, when she was 13, she took a train to stay with her absentee father in east Chicago. After a fortnight, Noble Hardaway packed his daughter off to a second aunt, the wife of a church deacon.
